History

Australian Food Microbiology was conceptualised by Craig Andrew-Kabilafkas in 2001, as a food microbiology business that could provide expert resources and support to the Australian retail food sector.  It would be the conduit for the FOODCHECK food safety service launched the preceding year. 

In the early years the focus was to establish FOODCHECK but demands from the food industry saw the range of professional services expand to include training of food handlers, training of laboratory staff, support in establishing and developing food testing laboratories, food safety support to food manufacturers, inspection and support for Gold License restaurants and caterers, preparation of nutritional information panels, allergen management and support, training of Quality Assurance staff and mentoring of Quality Assurance Managers, preparation of HACCP food safety plans and accreditation of HACCP food safety plans.  FOODCHECK became established as the only food safety system that includes inspections and food analysis for restaurants, caterers, school canteens, hotels, pubs and clubs. 

In 2014 Australian Food Microbiology acquired the NATA accredited Scienserv laboratory from Francois Cicurel upon his retirement, and relocated it from Mosman to Castle Hill.  Since then the laboratory has grown to include a more comprehensive suite of testing services to meet the needs of the Australian Food Microbiology client base.

Our scientific techniques include classical microbiological techniques, rapid techniques, technologies including PCR, and now cutting edge methodologies for COVID-19 assays of environmental surface swabs.  Craig has often described the Australian Food Microbiology laboratory as “boutique” as we are able to service the needs of our customers in a personal and comprehensive manner. We collect samples from our customers sites, we service clients throughout Australia and the nearby regions, we provide succinct analytical reports and comprehensive risk assessment reports.  We liaise with government and industry agencies to help our clients better manage their food safety needs.

We continue to gather clients who are seeking reliable and trustworthy food safety services.  Our staff are friendly, competent and as equally committed to our food safety services as is our founder, Craig Andrew-Kabilafkas.
